Community Engaged Mini Grants Program

Unidas por Salud is dedicated to building the capacity of students to carry out community engaged research. The Mini Grants program aims to address the healthcare needs of disadvantaged communities and patients in the rural desert region of Inland Southern California, as well as build the capacity of students to conduct community engaged research to address health disparities in our region.

Eligible Community Academic Teams

Undergraduate students in their 3rd and 4th years and graduate and professional students enrolled in any degree program at the University of California Riverside are eligible to apply as academic student lead. At least 1 team member must speak Spanish or Purépecha, the main languages spoken in disadvantaged communities in the region. Student teams are paired with a Unidas por Salud community health worker/promotor(a) with expertise in health disparities research.

2023 Mini Grant Awardee

My Culture and My Health: The Influence of My Health Beliefs led by Sophia Rodriguez, doctoral student in Anthropology, was the recipient of the 2023 Mini Grant award. This project collaborated with leaders of the Purépecha community in the Eastern Coachella Valley to understand disparities related to health literacy, health beliefs, and the meaning and interpretation of health information among members of the Purépecha community.
