HABLAMoS

Hispanic and Bilingual Longitudinal Ambulatory Studies

The HABLAMoS curriculum builds language and communication skills in clinical and public health contexts and cultural and structural competency. The curriculum for medical students includes material for workshops, OSCEs, Medical Spanish lessons, case-based learning, and cultural exchanges or intercambios.

The humanities and social sciences are incorporated into the curriculum, prompting students to consider health as a human right, as well as the role of social and structural factors in health disparities among Spanish-speaking patients.

"[The program] allows students to develop competencies and speak in Spanish with their patients and with community members in order to improve the quality of care that we can give to our future patients. . .  to better understand the cultural components or the social economic disparities and inequity that these communities might be experiencing."
